International Affairs Writing

A workshop for professionals in government, think tanks, nonprofits and the private sector

Universities teach academic writing, not how to produce real-world policy briefs, memos and analyses. So it's hardly surprising that many young professionals feel ill-prepared for the highly competitive international affairs job market. If you can relate, this hands-on workshop will refine and elevate your writing skills and boost your confidence in navigating your dream career.

Every session will focus on a genre or form of international affairs writing, such as policy briefs and memos, reporting and analysis, policy recommendations and advocacy, diplomatic communication and op-ed writing. After reviewing best practices and learning from influential examples, you will draft your own pieces, which will then be critiqued by the instructor and other participants. The feedback and your subsequent re-writing will help make your style crisper and clearer, your arguments stronger, and your expression more compelling.

We will also explore how AI can benefit writing and editing in ethical ways, as well as its risks and limitations.

The instructor for this course is Nicholas Kralev, WIDA’s executive director and former Financial Times and Washington Times correspondent. His work has also been published in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Foreign Policy and other outlets. He has written four books, including “Diplomatic Tradecraft” (Cambridge University Press, 2024).

Fluency in English is required for this course, as well as previous writing experience, at least at the university level.

This four-week online program includes two 2-hour sessions a week (on Tuesdays and Fridays), for a total of 16 instruction hours. Sessions will be held live, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. ET.
