for Foreign Diplomats in Washington

SUMMARY
The purpose of this symposium is to prepare foreign diplomats to be successful in the United States. It explores and explains all relevant aspects of U.S. policy and government operations, as well as Washington’s inner workings and public sphere. The carefully designed and interactive combination of classroom training, exercises and role-playing ensures that participants gain specific and usable understanding and insights that can help them fulfill their duties effectively. The course addresses the most pressing challenges of embassy work and gives diplomats the tools to tackle them. It is taught by leading practitioners and scholars, who present the respective issues’ practical implications and real-life opportunities and risks.

3:30 p.m. Building relationships: Differences between political appointees and civil servants
